Apple mela in salsa greca dunque: secondo una leggenda, il Drago era una terribile creatura, raffigurata in una costellazione come un grande serpente che avvolgeva le sue spire intorno al polo celeste. Vari sono i miti che lo vedono protagonista ma, nel più conosciuto, era Ladone che fu ucciso in una delle sue celebri dodici fatiche da Ercole. Questi aveva il compito di sottrarre le mele d’oro dell’albero, che si trovava nel giardino delle Esperidi. Ercole lo uccise di sorpresa e lo trafisse, scagliando nel giardino una freccia da un luogo in cui la creatura non poteva vederlo. Insieme a Ladone si prendevano cura dei preziosi pomi (la nostra Apple Mela) anche le Esperidi (figlie del Titano Atlante – che reggeva il mondo sulle spalle – e di Esperide) che ora ne piangevano la morte, coprendosi il viso dorato con le loro braccia d’avorio.

Where does the charm of the Apple that so many followers have found in recent decades come from? It’s easy to think of Eva and the Garden of Eden but the Greek world has also done its part.
According to legend, the Dragon was a terrible creature, depicted in a constellation like a large snake that wrapped its coils around the celestial pole. Various are the myths that see it as the starring but, in the best known, it was Ladone who was killed in one of his famous twelve labors by Hercules. These had the task of removing the golden apples of the tree, which was in the garden of the Hesperides. Hercules killed him by surprise and pierced him, throwing an arrow in the garden from a place where the creature could not see him. Together with Ladone, the Hesperides (daughters of the Titan Atlas – who held the world on their shoulders – and of Hesperides) also took care of the precious “apples”, who now mourned death, covering their golden faces with their ivory arms.
