From an environmental point of view hydrogen cars would seem to be the Shangri-La of the third millennium … They have the great advantage of not producing polluting emissions and, moreover, they release only water vapor in the environment. Hydrogen has already been used as fuel for rockets (Apollo and Shuttle in the first place) but, on the “terrestrial scale”, it is difficult to “declinate” it as fuel for cars. Because “producing” it / obtaining it, then splitting water (H2O) into hydrogen and oxygen, requires, in reality, a great deal of energy.
But, to tell the truth, there are two types of H engines: in one model hydrogen is burned alone, or in addition to other fuels; in the second, the operation is based on the “chemical reunification” between hydrogen and oxygen (a sort of return to the origins …) and is the basis of fuel cell technology (electrochemical device that allows to obtain electricity directly without any thermal combustion process ed.)

Other Achilles’ heel the distribution network; Shell (the Dutch multinational), however, recently announced that it will complete the capillary distribution of hydrogen in its filling stations between 2015 and 2025.
