Favola dei cinque nani
Favola con protagonista Plutone: non siamo nel bosco con Biancaneve ma nelle profondità del nostro Sistema Solare. Dopo la retrocessione di Plutone, anno Domini 2006, a “pianeta nano”, oggi in questa speciale classifica trovano posto cinque piccoli corpi celesti.
Il primo (e capostipite) è proprio Pluto, il pianeta identificato con una delle principali divinità della mitologia romana, fratello di Giove e signore dell’Ade (regno dei morti) sul quale regnava assieme alla dea Proserpina da lui rapita mentre coglieva i fiori sulle rive del lago Pergusa (in Sicilia); quest’ultima era figlia della divinità materna della terra e della fertilità, Cerere; e proprio Cerere è il nome del secondo pianeta nano, con annessa favola, annidato nella fascia degli asteroidi (corpi compresi fra le orbite di Marte e Giove), il primo di tale classe di corpi celesti a essere stato scoperto, il 1º gennaio 1801, da parte dell’astronomo italiano Padre Giuseppe Piazzi dall’osservatorio di Palermo (e Cerere era la protettrice dell’isola per i Romani); considerato per mezzo secolo l’ottavo pianeta, oggi ha una doppia natura: asteroide e pianeta nano. L’elenco dei nani, modello favola, comprende anche Eris, corpo celeste appartenente alla Fascia di Edgeworth-Kuiper, la zona del nostro Sistema Solare posta oltre l’orbita di Plutone; nella mitologia greca era la dea della discordia, strettamente legata ad Ares (dio della guerra); il penultimo nano è Haumea, oggetto trans-nettuniano e la dea della fertilità delle hawaiana; oltre l’orbita di Nettuno è posto anche l’ultimo pianeta nano fino a oggi classificato, ovvero Makemake, divinità della creazione secondo la mitologia dell’Isola di Pasqua.

A Fairy Tale with starring Pluto: we are not in the woods with Snow White but in the depths of our Solar System. After the relegation of Pluto, year Domini 2006, to “dwarf planet”, today in this special ranking there are five small celestial bodies.
The first (and forefather) is just Pluto, the planet identified with one of the main deities of Roman mythology, brother of Jupiter and lord of Hades (kingdom of the dead) on which he reigned along with the goddess Proserpina he kidnapped while catching flowers on shores of Lake Pergusa (in Sicily – Italy); the latter was a daughter of the maternal deity of the earth and of fertility, Ceres; and just Ceres is the name of the second dwarf planet, with an attached fable, nested in the asteroid belt (bodies included between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter), the first of this class of celestial bodies to have been discovered, on 1 January 1801, by the Italian astronomer Father Giuseppe Piazzi from the Palermo observatory (and Ceres was the protector of the island for the Romans); considered the eighth planet for half a century, today it has a double nature: asteroid and dwarf planet. The list of dwarves, also includes Eris, a celestial body belonging to the Edgeworth-Kuiper Belt, the area of our Solar System located beyond the orbit of Pluto; in Greek mythology it was the goddess of discord, closely linked to Ares (god of war); the penultimate dwarf is Haumea, a trans-neptunian object and the fertility goddess of the Hawaiian; beyond the orbit of Neptune there is also the last dwarf planet to date classified, namely Makemake, deity of creation according to the mythology of Easter Island.
