Grande Fratello: dal 1948 all’iPhone
Grande Fratello, è ancora viva la polemica legata alla tracciabilità degli iPhone che, grazie ai dispositivi 3G Apple, registravano la posizione dell’utente in un file definito “segreto”.
Anche in questo caso è stata (ab)usata, in varie occasioni, l’espressione “Grande Fratello”.
E molti, ovviamente, avranno pensato al noto reality show. Ma c’è un altro GF (quello originale) antecedente all’era televisiva e che affonda invece le radici in un passato non troppo remoto, per la precisione al 1948, quando George Orwell, finisce di scrivere il romanzo 1984 (in realtà il volume fu stampato nel 1949).
In un futuro (oramai passato), per la precisione nel 1984 (una sorta di anagramma di 1948, anno in cui il romanzo venne appunto scritto), la Terra è divisa in tre grandi potenze totalitarie e perennemente in guerra tra loro: i nomi di questi super stati sono Oceania (dove risiede il protagonista del romanzo), Eurasia ed Estasia; sfruttando una guerra perenne i “burattinai” dei tre Stati riescono a mantenere il controllo totale sulle rispettive società. Per quanto riguarda l’Oceania, la sede dei vari ministeri della Pace (che gestisce la guerra ndr), dell’Amore (legato alla sicurezza), della Verità (si occupa della stampa) e dell’Abbondanza (presiede all’economia) sono a Londra, location del romanzo.
La società è amministrata secondo i principi del Socing, il Partito Socialista Inglese, ed è governata da un onnipotente partito unico con a capo il “Grande Fratello”, un personaggio che nessuno ha mai visto e che tiene costantemente sotto stretto controllo la vita di tutti i cittadini, limitando al massimo ogni libertà. Un “fratello maggiore” da prendere davvero con le pinze…

Big Brother, the controversy linked to the traceability of the iPhone is still alive, thanks to Apple 3G devices, recording the user’s position in a file called “secret”.
Also in this case it has been (ab) used, on various occasions, the expression “Big Brother”.
And many, of course, will have thought about the well-known reality show. But there is another GF (the original one) before the TV era and that instead sinks its roots in a not too remote past, to be precise in 1948, when George Orwell finishes writing the novel 1984 (actually the volume it was printed in 1949).
In a future (now past), to be precise in 1984 (a sort of anagram of 1948, the year in which the novel was written), the Earth is divided into three great totalitarian powers and perpetually at war with each other: the names of these super states are Oceania (where the protagonist of the novel resides), Eurasia and Estasia; exploiting a perennial war the “puppeteers” of the three states manage to maintain total control over their respective societies. As for Oceania, the headquarters of the various ministries of Peace (which manages the war ed), Love (linked to security), Truth (deals with the press) and Abundance (presides over the economy) are in London, location of the novel.
The society is administered according to the principles of Socing, the English Socialist Party, and is governed by an omnipotent single party headed by the “Big Brother”, a character that no one has ever seen and who constantly keeps everyone’s life under strict control citizens, limiting every freedom to the maximum.
