Pietra Solare e vichinghi: alcuni scienziati l’hanno identificata con un tipo di calcite (o spato) molto trasparente e che si può trovare in Islanda. La pietra solare, ci informano gli esperti, emette, riflette, trasmette la luce; e i fisici moderni spiegano che la calcite islandese separa i raggi solari che la attraversano. Anche altri materiali lo fanno ma non in maniera così spiccata o se lo fanno non sono così comuni in Islanda e, in generale, in Scandinavia. Un fisico francese, Guy Ropars, dell’Università di Rennes, ha realizzato un piccolo apparecchio, una scatoletta, chiusa da due piccole tavole di legno, una delle quali, forata, lascia passare un raggio di luce. Fra le due tavolette è collocata la calcite e la luce, passando attraverso la “pietra del Sole”, si divide in due raggi che proiettano due deboli macchioline di luce. Spostando a caso la scatola c’è solo una posizione in cui le due macchioline si equivalgono in brillantezza: ed è così che, grazie alla Pietra Solare, si capisce dove è posizionato il Sole. Orientarsi, poi, diventa(va) facile e, di conseguenza, raggiungere il “Nuovo Mondo”.

Some scientists have identified it with a type of mineral calcite (or spato) that is very transparent and can be found in Iceland. The solar stone, experts inform us, emit, reflect, transmit light; and modern physicists explain that Icelandic calcite separates the solar rays that pass through it. Also other materials do it but not so strongly or if they do they are not so common in Iceland and, in general, in Scandinavia. A French physicist, Guy Ropars, of the University of Rennes, has created a small device, a small box, enclosed by two small wooden boards, one of which, pierced, lets in a ray of light. Between the two tablets is placed the calcite and the light, passing through the “stone of the Sun”, is divided into two rays that project two faint specks of light. Moving the box at random, there is only one position in which the two small spots are equivalent in brilliance: and this is how one understands where the Sun is positioned. Orienting oneself, then, becomes (goes) easy and, consequently, reaches the ” New world”.
