Tom Tom Club rock star virtuali

Tom Tom ClubTom Tom Club: rock star animate (?) nell’era pre digitale

Eravamo quindi in era rigorosamente pre Internet…

Internet e cervello, mi piace? (parte I)

English Version

Tom Tom Club Story: an interesting alternative-virtual rock experiment took place during the mythical “Eighties” (in the pre-Internet era). It was 1980 and, among the most popular groups, there were the Talking Heads (1974-1991), an Anglo-American formation of “avant-garde-pop”, characterized by intriguing experiments on differente musical levels. Frontman was David Byrne, while the rest of the group consisted of Jerry Harrison (guitar), Tina Weymouth (bass) and Chris Frantz – formerly Charlton Christopher Frantz – (drums). The last two (among other things, husband and wife) launched a Tom Tom Club parallel music project in the year of the Moscow Summer Olympics. The target was the New Wave (in those years prevailing), so lighter than the in the tones of their “official group”. From the debut album (Omonimo) the two songs taken by many are considered the greatest successes of TTC: “Genius of Love” and “Wordy Rappinghood”. In the first videos they appeared in the form of comics and their “virtual” imprint accompanied them throughout their careers, a choice probably due to not causing confusion with the “mother company”, but remained untouched even after the curtain fell on the Talking Head adventure. To confirm this, just look at the cute avatars on their website. The last album, titled Downtown Rockers was released in 2012.
