Vichinghi popolo di navigatori che, come è noto, popolarono Islanda e Groenlandia e raggiunsero l’America ben prima di Cristoforo Colombo. Ma come facevano a orientarsi, visto che non risulta che nell’epoca dei loro grandi viaggi, intorno all’anno 1000, la bussola fosse stata inventata e neppure che usassero strumenti, assai diffusi nel Mediterraneo, quali gli astrolabi?
Avevano i loro espedienti: per esempio, si narra di un navigatore che portava con sé una gabbia di corvi e che lasciava andare per osservarne il comportamento. Se volavano in tondo attorno alla nave e vi si posavano: “no terra!”. Se invece puntavano verso un direzione precisa il risultato, e conseguente urlo, era: “terra!”.
Un altro modo per scegliere la rotta era ovviamente l’uso delle stelle.
Ma il cielo, sopra ai mari che navigavano i “Vikings”, era spesso coperto; inoltre, le notti in estate, stagione nella quale viaggiavano duravano poco o nulla alle alte latitudini (vedi Sole di mezzanotte).
E per il Sole si presentava un problema identico di copertura nuvolosa… Ma anche con l’“astro del giorno” dietro alle nuvole si poteva usare uno strumento ad hoc: la “pietra del Sole”… (continua)

The Vikings were a population of navigators who, as is well known, populated Iceland and Greenland and reached America well before Christopher Columbus. But how did they find their way around, given that it does not appear that at the time of their great travels, around the year 1000, when the compass had not been invented yet and even that they used instruments, very common in the Mediterranean, such as astrolabes?
They had their gimmicks: for example, it tells of a navigator who carried with him a cage of crows and who let go to observe its behavior. If they flew in circles around the ship and landed there: “no land!” If instead they aimed towards a precise direction the result, and consequent shout, was: “earth!”.

But the sky, above the seas that hey sailed, was often covered; moreover, the nights in summer, the season in which they traveled, lasted little or nothing at high latitudes (see Midnight Sun).
And for the Sun there was an identical problem of cloud cover … But even with the “star of the day” behind the clouds an ad hoc instrument could be used: the “stone of the Sun” …
