Slot Machine: pronti, partenza, via!
Slot Machine sono sinonimo di entry level per il gioco d’azzardo. Le slot machine, nome spesso abbreviato semplicemente in “slot” furono inventate da un meccanico Charles Fey (all’anagrafe August Fey), nel lontano 1895 in quel di San Francisco. Nato a Vöhringen (Baviera) nel 1861, nel 1907, Fey entrò in società con la Mills Novelty Company e, da questa joint venture prese il via la produzione delle “Mills Liberty Bell”. Queste prime macchine, dalle quali prese il là un successo davvero planetario, presentavano una campana (che suonava a ogni combinazione vincente) ed erano dotate di una serie di carte da gioco (erano quindi più simili a un video poker).
Nel 1910, la Mills Novelty Co. introdusse una nuova versione della macchina (delle slot machine) cui venne dato il nome di “Operator Bell”. Presentava un ingresso per le monete più facilmente accessibile e, per la prima volta, comparivano i famosi simboli della frutta, usati tutt’oggi.

Slot machines are synonymous with entry level gambling. The slot machines, a name often simply shortened to “slots” were invented by a mechanic Charles Fey (in the August Fey registry), way back in 1895 in San Francisco. Born in Vöhringen (Bavaria) in 1861, in 1907, Fey entered into partnership with the Mills Novelty Company and, from this joint venture, the production of the “Mills Liberty Bell” began. These first machines, from which there was a truly planetary success, featured a bell (which sounded at every winning combination) and were equipped with a series of playing cards (they were therefore more like a video poker).
In 1910, Mills Novelty Co. introduced a new version of the machine (of slot machines) which was given the name “Operator Bell”. It presented an entrance for coins more easily accessible and, for the first time, the famous symbols of fruit appeared, still used today.
This new version was very heavy, all in steel, and, according to the sources, it seems that as many as 30,000 units have been manufactured.
