Videotel (charter I) una storia di ordinario (in)successo
Videotel: il nonno delle chat e di Internet, fu sperimentato a partire dal 1981 e divenne operativo nel 1985. Era un sistema telematico per lo scambio delle informazioni e dati lanciato dall’allora Sip.
Videotel: per il suo funzionamento era necessario noleggiare un apposito apparecchio con monitor da 9 pollici. Anche a causa degli alti costi (al canone di abbonamento andava infatti aggiunto un costo a consumo) il numero degli abbonati non decollò mai veramente. Ci fu però un improvviso interesse quando un gruppo di hacker “bucò” l’algoritmo per la creazione delle password e quindi scoprì come addebitare al titolare della password stessa il costo della chiamata.
Per Videotel un’altra chance di accesso era assicurata tramite Commodore 64 con lo speciale adattatore telematico, un apparecchio che permettevo di modulare e demodulare i vari segnali e quindi renderli fruibili ai possessori del C64 (in realtà era una versione adattata al Belpaese del modem inglese Miracle/Y2).
Sulla sua scia, nonostante lo scarso successo riscontrato, hanno preso le prime mosse gli embrioni di quelle che sarebbero poi diventate le chatroom (all’epoca chiamate “messaggerie”) e la prima rivista che dibatteva una nuova e interessante realtà che si stava affacciando all’orizzonte: il cyberspazio. L’avventura era quindi segnata e così il servizio chiuse i battenti nel 1994.
Ma nel 2001 ci fu un revival…

Videotel: the grandfather of chats and the Internet, was experimented starting from 1981 and became operational in 1985. It was a telematic system for the exchange of information and data launched by italian SIP.
For its operation it was necessary to rent a special device with a 9-inch monitor. Also because of the high costs (to the subscription fee was in fact added a cost to consumption) the number of subscribers never really took off. But there was a sudden interest when a group of hackers “pierced” the password creation algorithm and then discovered how to charge the caller with the cost of the call.
For Videotel another chance of access was ensured through Commodore 64 with the special telematic adapter, a device that allowed to modulate and demodulate the various signals and then make them usable to C64 owners (in reality it was a version adapted to the Belpaese of the English modem Miracle / Y2).
After Videotel, despite the limited success, the first embryos of what would later become the chatrooms (at the time called “messaggerie”) and the first magazine that debated a new and interesting reality that was emerging on the horizon: cyberspace. The Videotel adventure was therefore marked and so the service closed its doors in 1994.
But in 2001 there was a revival …
