Anche le strade che attraversano la “Grande Rete” sono lastricate di successi e insuccessi. Basti ricordare, per esempio, Excite…
In questo senso è paradigmatica la parabola di Netscape Navigator che può essere considerato il primo browser “grafico” apparso sugli schermi: una vera e propria “rise and fall”.
Il suo atto di nascita risale all’anno 1994 (“registrato all’anagrafe” a cura della Netscape Communications Corporation); inizialmente si chiama Mosaic Navigator ma, dopo una controversia sul nome, contestato da National Center for Supercomputing Applications, che aveva rilasciato in precedenza il browser “NCSA Mosaic”, viene ribattezzato “Netscape Navigator”.
Leader indiscusso per anni nella navigazione, dal 1998 comincia sentire il fiato sul collo di Microsoft Internet Explorer, il browser sviluppato dalla corazzata di Redmond a partire dal ‘93.
Explorer in quegli anni, tra l’altro, era fornito di serie da Microsoft e la simbiosi raggiunse il culmine nel 1998, quando fu rilasciato “Windows 98”. Ovvio che l’ascesa di IE diventasse inarrestabile, nonostante Netscape in alcune funzioni fosse ancora superiore.
La perdita di fette di mercato, nonostante la distribuzione gratuita via web, si accompagnò anche a una crisi societaria interna che impedì lo sviluppo del progetto. Nel dicembre 2007, viene annunciata la fine del progetto e l’ultima versione di Netscape è la 9.0.0.6 rilasciata il 20 febbraio 2008.
Ancora oggi c’è comunque in rete un 1% di “internauti nostalgici” che lo utilizza.
