Gorillaz leggesi musicisti virtuali per un successo reale: potrebbe essere questa la parabola della “cartoon band” Gorillaz, nata, nel 1998, dalla creatività del musicista inglese Damon Albarn, leader delle rock band Blur (gruppo simbolo del brit pop insieme agli Oasis) e The Good, the Bad and the Queen e Jamie Hewlett, co-creatore del comic book Tank Girl.

Il nome nascerebbe dall’unione fra la parola Gorilla (in realtà era questo il primo nome della band) e la z di Mazinga Z, il primo (in ordine cronologico) robot giapponese, antesignano di Goldrake, il robot proveniente dal paese dell’I-Mode
Va detto anche che, nel 1998, era uscito sugli schermi (diretto da Roland Emmerich, papà, fra gli altri di Indipendence Day e The Day After Tomorrow) il remake di Godzilla il mitico mostro giapponese; e anche qui le Z non mancano e tra l’altro vi fu inoltre in passato – nel 1962 – una pellicola dal titolo “King Kong contro Godzilla”, tanto per rimanere in tema di “primati”.
Per non parlare del fatto che aleggiassero nell’aria Jurassic Wordl and company…
La peculiarità della band è di essere costituita da quattro personaggi che hanno le sembianze di animazioni. All’anagrafe risultano essere 2D, Murdoc, Noodle, Russel, vivono e suonano prevalentemente su Internet e dintorni. Music & Lyrics, non potendo essere ancora suonate e scritte da simil-avatar, sono il frutto di una collaborazione tra vari artisti, essendo il sopra citato Albarn l’unico membro permanente (in carne e ossa) della band.
Il genere musicale dei Gorillaz è per lo più alternative rock, anche se non mancano contaminazioni, pop, dub e hip-hop. Il primo album (con il nome della band) è stato pubblicato nel 2001 e tra le tracce spiccava la hit “Clint Eastwood”. La discografia ufficiale aggiornata comprende anche Demon Days (2005), Plastic beach (2010) e The Fall (2011).
Dopo una pausa di circa 4 anni (dal 2012 al 2016), il 28 aprile 2017 il gruppo ha pubblicato il quinto album Humanz, seguito nel 2018 da The Now Now.

Gorillaz are virtual musicians for a real success: this could be the parable of the “cartoon band” Gorillaz, born, in 1998, from the creativity of the English musician Damon Albarn, leader of the rock bands Blur (a symbolic group of brit pop together with Oasis) and The Good, the Bad and the Queen and Jamie Hewlett, co-creator of the comic book Tank Girl.
The name is the union between the word Gorilla (in reality this was the first name of the band) and the z of Mazinger Z, the first (in chronological order) Japanese robot, forerunner of Goldrake.
It must also be said that, in 1998, the remake of Godzilla, the mythical Japanese monster, was released on the screens (directed by Roland Emmerich, father, among others of Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow); and here too the Z are not lacking and among other things there was also in the past – in 1962 – a film entitled “King Kong against Godzilla”, just to stay on the subject of “primates”.
The peculiarity of the band is that it consists of four characters that look like animations.
