Il Dado è tratto “Alea iacta est”, già ammoniva Giulio Cesare e infatti quello dei dadi era un gioco diffuso e regolamentato al tempo degli antichi Romani. Ma non ebbe fortuna solo nell’Urbe (e Impero); infatti vi giocavano già i Greci, gli Egizi e varie popolazioni asiatiche.
Ma è al tempo delle Crociate che si verificò una seconda giovinezza del gioco. E infatti si pone ai tempi delle crociate la “seconda” nascita del gioco, in una cittadina chiamata “Hazard”, il cui nome deriva da una parola araba “Azzah”, che significa proprio “dadi”. Il Dado è tratto quindi e non è casuale che, per molto tempo, il gioco fu anche chiamato “azzardo”, anzi si può considerare il primo gioco d’azzardo ufficialmente riconosciuto poker compreso.
Dopo il ritorno dei crociati i quali lo portarono con sé, si registrò un forte incremento delle persone catturate dal gioco, specialmente in Francia (una sorta di prequel delle moderne slot machine).
